CHAPTER 23

Dina’s reaction to my update about the red Tesla was hard to read over the phone. Despite the fact that we’ve been friends forever, I couldn’t tell if she was distracted by something else or trying to play it cool. I’d called a few minutes after my conversation with Tracy Howell, summarized what I’d learned about the Tesla, including the exotic female driver, but Dina didn’t say anything for a few moments.

“Lucky him,” she finally replied.

I waited for a few more seconds to see if she had anything to add. When it was obvious that she didn’t, I asked if I’d interrupted something important.

“Not really,” she said. “I’m in the middle of reading a report that Denny Santiago filed earlier.”

“Oh, well I can call back if—”

“Care to guess what it’s about?” she said.

“I have no idea,” I replied. “Care to give me a clue?”

She laughed. “I’ll give you two, Katie. Red Tesla.” She paused briefly. “And a brunette with the need for speed.”

“I’m listening,” I said. “Sounds like you have something new that connects to the Dutton case.”

“You’re right. Denny arrested a young woman this morning for doing ninety in a twenty-five. Her name is Dominique Bisset. She’s originally from a small village in the south of France, but is now living in Miami Beach.”

“And she flew into town to act as the driver for a wealthy investor, right?”

“Not exactly,” Dina said. “Ms. Bisset is here because her boyfriend is a guy called Mick Gulman. But she does serve as his chauffeur when they travel.”

“Okay,” I said. “What do we know about him?”

“Don’t you recognize the last name?” she asked.

“Should I?”

“Well, to be fair, it took me a minute,” Dina replied. “But Mick Gulman’s father cofounded Tobin & Associates with Brian and Ashley’s dad about thirty years ago.”

“I wasn’t aware of that.”

“No reason that you should be,” she said. “I just happen to remember a case that someone told me about from around twenty years ago. Ira Gulman was charged with tax fraud for falsifying his paystubs from Tobin & Gulman Accounting, which is what the firm was called for the first decade or so.”

“Let me guess,” I said. “After the elder Mr. Gulman went to jail, the company name was changed and his family moved out of state to avoid the shame and fallout from the scandal. Is that at all close to what happened?”

“Pretty much,” Dina said. “Except Ira Gulman didn’t serve time. It was even worse than that. He took his own life before the trial.”

My heart sank. “Oh, my goodness. That’s horrible.”

“From what I read in the files,” Dina went on, “and a few comments that I heard from people in town, the episode broke the Gulman family. The mother went to live with relatives somewhere in Nebraska. The oldest son moved west, but nobody heard from him again. And the youngest son, our friend Mick, headed for the high life in South Beach. He was in his early twenties, and he didn’t make the trip alone.
